The up-and-coming South African triathlete Kyle Buckingham only discovered his talent for endurance sports at the age of 25. That didn’t stop him from becoming a double Ironman Champion and one of the most successful South African Athletes.
South Africa’s Kyle Buckingham travelled the world riding waves and tried to cut it as a pro surfer. Unfortunately, this dream didn’t become reality and his way lead him away from the beaches to London, where he worked as an electrician. It was during this time a housemate convinced Buckingham to try out triathlon. But Kyle, the laid back but still very determined person he is, didn’t want do just train. So it came and he signed himself up for the Ironman South Africa. With no background in endurance sports, Kyle tried to prepare himself in his own ways: “I only started training after my daily work, at around 6pm till 10pm and only got to eat a healthy meal at around 11pm every night. I trained on an indoor trainer and on a treadmill. Open-air bike sessions were only possible on a Saturday. I remember how I was training with a heater blowing on me to try to get used to some heat but that wasn’t the best idea after nearly fainting a few times”. Despite the unconventional preparation, Kyle finished his first race in seventh place of in his age group. He was hooked on the sport and has progressed massively every year since. “Ironman is a huge inspiration for me. When I used to live in London and train on the indoor trainer for hours every day I used to watch the Ironman Hawaii movies, and I wanted to be like those guys winning Kona one day. I’m closer to this goal than I’ve ever been before”, sais Kyle. In 2013, the triathlete with the royal name became part of the On family. “I’m more than happy to be part of a company that produces a product that is so unique and designed by like minded people who have tried, tested and moulded a shoe that is perfect for a runner. There is so much passion that goes around the On family and I am proud to be apart of that”. We are sure that Kyle is on track to achieve the ultimate goal of every Ironman triathlete: to win Kona. May your clouds fly you to the finish line, Kyle!
