Frederik Van Lierde, Ironman Triathlete

His aim was clear: He wanted to win the Ironman in Kona and become World Champion. Throughout the whole year 2013 the Belgian focussed on this event, worked hard and sacrificed a lot. Already as a child Frederik showed willpower and determination, but always stayed true to himself and never forgot about his friends and family.

Frederik was born in Menen, a Flemish speaking Belgian city at the border with France. He started as a swimmer and is competing in triathlon since he was 17 years old.

His breakthrough year on short distance triathlon was 2002 with a victory in the Belgian championships and Vice-European title in the U23 category. Fredo, as the French people call him, decided to go to long course triathlon in 2007 and debuted with a European title on the ITU European championships long distance in his home country! The tone was set, long distance was his cup of tea and in 2008 – his debut on Ironman – the 2nd place in New Zealand showed that he had big potential on Ironman distance.

Freddy, as the English speaking people call him, had another breakthrough year in 2011, but now on long course. He didn’t win just one but three races: the 70.3 in South Africa, the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon and Ironman France!

In 2012 things only got better with a personal best of 8h01' and a marathon of 2h42' and he finished 3rd in Ironman Melbourne. In Nice, he won for the second year in a row. And last but not least, Frederik won the bronze medal at the 2012 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, in October.

2013 was his most successful year so far. Frederik put all his focus on winning the Ironman in Kona. He trained hard and participated in selected races only as Abu Dhabi and Nice. Out of six races, Frederik won four times and became one of the top favorites for Kona. Becoming World Champion 2013 was a dream come true.

Frederik was able to score all these top results also thanks to a change in his footwear. As of January 2013 on, Freddy wears the On Cloudracer in all his races.

I really wanted to get into these shoes from the first time that I tried them on. I was always a good runner, but with On I can go faster and further without risking injuries – which I have been struggling with before.

The top triathlete is married since 2002 to his wife Sofie. Fredo says that without her support throughout all these years, he wouldn’t have been able to achieve all this. In this free time Frederik enjoys playing with his two boys. His favorite dish is all kind of Italian food, including a good glass of red wine.
