Caroline Steffen, Ironman triathlete
She’s tall and always ready to "go to war" on a triathlon course, which is why Caroline Steffen’s fellow teamTBB members gave her the moniker "Xena the Warrior Princess."
Caroline grew up in a small village in Switzerland, surrounded by mountains and a lake, and she’s been tackling land and water ever since as a champion in her field. She began her sporting life as a swimmer, but unlike most professional swimmers, she didn’t have a formal coach until she was 12 and only joined a weekly swim club. Xena proved to be a natural in the pool, and within two years made the Swiss national junior team.
She displayed this propensity for learning quickly yet again when she decided to start competing as a cyclist. Xena dominates on the bike as cycling is her forte, and she was also a member of the Swiss national cycling squad. In 2009, prompted by her partner and now teamTBB athlete, Australian pro triathlete David Dellow, Caroline Steffen decided to start competing in triathlons professionally. She moved to Australia and began training alongside Dellow. Despite having only recently turned pro, Xena gave it her all and won 7 out of 12 races und only missed the podium once. 2012 was a spectacular year for the swiss athlete and she won practically every race she entered, becoming the Ironman European Champion and celebrated a dominating victory at the Ironman Asian Championship - missing the world record by a mere 50 seconds. "It was the perfect race", says Caroline, "I finally could show the world that I can run! Thanks to the On Cloudracer, my legs actually felt better at the finish than at the beginning of the run." And last but not least, Caroline won the silver medal at the 2012 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, in October.
It feels pretty awesome to run with my new On shoes. Their soft landing and powerful push-off make me less tired and the run feels more explosive.
These victories are the result of a striking increase in her running. Caroline Steffen attributes this to a change in her footwear: Since 2012, Caroline uses to train and compete the On running shoes from Switzerland with the patented CloudTec technology. "Thanks to the On I can finally run without pain. They are the key to the fact that I could expand my running and now can also exploit my full potential in the marathon."
